There’s a whole wave of people in their 50s, 60s, and beyond who are stepping into a second career, an encore career built around purpose instead of just a paycheck. They’ve raised the families, done the decades, and arrived at a question that won’t leave them alone: what was I actually put here to do?

Your experience is the advantage, not the obstacle
The story we’re often told is that business is a young person’s game, that you need to be fluent in technology and trends to compete. I want to gently push back on that.
What you have that a 25-year-old doesn’t is lived wisdom. Decades of understanding people. Hard-won perspective. The kind of presence that makes someone feel truly heard. Those are the exact qualities that make a great coach. You’re not starting from zero. You’re starting from a lifetime of relevant experience.
The real obstacle (and it’s not your age)
Here’s the honest challenge for second-career entrepreneurs: it’s not capability, and it’s not age. It’s the overwhelming complexity of modern business building.
You came to help people, and suddenly you’re told you need to learn funnels, copywriting, email marketing, social media, branding, and AI before you can begin. For someone who didn’t grow up with these tools, that mountain can feel impossibly steep. Tech overwhelm and AI overwhelm are real, and they stop a lot of brilliant people before they start.
But the obstacle is the complexity, not you. And complexity can be removed.
How to Start a Coaching Business After 50, without the overwhelm
If I could give you just a few honest starting points:
Start with clarity, not tactics. Before you touch a single funnel or app, get clear on who you want to help and the transformation you want to create. Clarity before strategy, always.
Don’t try to learn everything. You do not need to become a marketer, a designer, and a tech expert. You need a clear path and the right support, not a dozen certifications.
Use AI as a partner, not a puzzle. You don’t need to learn prompt engineering. The newest approaches to AI guided business building let you simply have a conversation and let the technology do the heavy lifting, which is a gift for non-technical entrepreneurs.
Find your people. A second-career journey is so much lighter when you’re surrounded by others who get it. Isolation is what makes people quit. Belonging is what keeps them going.
It’s not too late. It might be exactly the right time.
The desire you feel to build something meaningful in this chapter of your life isn’t random. Often it’s the first evidence that you’re capable of building it. You were given the vision for a reason.
